A teenage rock band from Mullion have stepped in to save the day by playing at our community pub fundraising event, to be held this Friday 24th November at the pub, from 7:30pm
The event has also received fantastic support from local businesses and individuals donating prizes for the raffle and auction that will take place on the night.
Flight 42, who only formed at the start of year but have already appeared at Boardmasters as well as drawing crowds at numerous venues across Helston and the Lizard, will be appearing at the Prince of Wales.
As followers are aware, the pub urgently needs funds for a new drainage system after the current tank was accidentally compromised due to reasons beyond our control. In just over a week, we have already raised half of the £17k required but rental of portaloos and constant drainage are costing money and threatening the pub, so the funds raised are helping to save the pub, while the committee works hard to raise the final amount before the festive season.
Katie Nightingale, chairperson of the Friends of Newtown St Martin Limited said: ‘We are so grateful for the lads from Flight 42 for offering to play our event at such short notice. They have built up an amazing following and we hope this will further boost our fundraising efforts.’
Flight 42 formed earlier in 2023 at Mullion School where all five members were studying for their GCSEs. Over the summer they packed out pubs such as The Old Inn in Mullion and The Blue Anchor in Helston with their lively brand of indie rock often causing the crowd to spill out into the street.
Their set is traditionally full of well-loved classics by bands such as The Killers, Oasis and The Kooks but they also play a handful of their own songs. Last month they recorded their first EP which will be coming out soon.
Katie added: ‘We are really looking forward to hearing them rock out Newtown St Martin and their support will make a real difference to so many people in the village and wider community who benefit from having a pub nearby.
‘Our current drainage system is not viable in the long term but once we get it replaced, we will be able to push ahead with our plans for a community larder and shop by the pub car park.’
The fundraising event starts at 7.30pm this Friday at the Prince of Wales pub in Newtown St Martin. There will be a raffle and an auction with prizes donated such as two hours’ free gardening and vouchers for food and drink at the pub as well as donations from nearby businesses such as Gear Farm in St Martin, Duke Stone, Telstar Taxis and local walking club Walk Kernow and Beyond the Wave who offer swimming sessions at nearby Trevassack Lake.
